COE Group wants to help future engineering professionals on their path by offering students opportunities to gain practical experience through real projects already during their studies.
In January, COE Group carried out a fourweek student project involving 12 HAMK students from different fields of study. The project was implemented in cooperation with KONE, and during it the students worked on tasks related to a Machine Vision project.
The project focused on evaluating the functionality of Machine Vision solutions. In practice, this meant verifying whether the system correctly identifies situations, incorrectly identifies them, or fails to detect something. The work was carried out in KONE’s system, giving the students a chance to see how Machine Vision solutions are used in practice and what kinds of requirements customer projects involve.
The month-long project brought new energy into COE Group’s daily work. Students’ diverse backgrounds and perspectives were visible in the way they worked, and collaboration flowed smoothly regardless of field. New networks, as well as friendship, were also formed during the project.
The project also aimed to support the students’ personal development. Participants were given the opportunity to review their CVs with professionals. These discussions emphasized the importance of showcasing one’s skills confidently and that a CV does not need to be forced onto one page if there is more to include.
Additionally, COE Group experts Atte and Simo presented their career paths and current roles. Through these conversations, students gained a concrete picture of the opportunities within the field and how different career paths can be built.

Since the group also included international students, the project introduced them to a touch of Finnish winter culture. After the workday, some participants got to try cross-country skiing for the first time and three new skiers had their very first experience with the sport.
Overall, the project was a rewarding experience for both the students and the COE Group team. It offered an opportunity for mutual learning and reinforced the understanding of how valuable new perspectives are for a workplace community.
